How to integrate a 3 volt garage door opener onto a motorcycle       Test Procedures

Summary: Install a garage door opener onto a motorcycle, and control it by flipping any switch on your handlebar.

Are you tired of fumbling around to open your automatic garage door opener while pulling up the driveway on your motorcycle?

We have come up with a cool, inexpensive way to integrate a garage door opener into your motorcycle.

You will need a 3 volt garage door remote, that will run your opener. Note: This will work on all bikes. For 12 volt remotes, click here.

Step 1 First thing you will need to open up the remote, most will just unsnap into two halves. Some models will have screws, check yours to be sure.

Step 2 Now find the internal main button that operates to open/close the door. It should have four metal solder points around the button. You will need to find the solder point on either side that connects to operate the door when you push the button. To do this, install the battery, stand in the garage, and place a jumper wire across the solder points until you activate the opener. These two contacts will be where you need to solder in the switch wire.

Step 3 Now you need to wire in a push button switch on these two wires that you have soldered to the remote. Make the wire length to the switch long enough to reach the spot for mounting.

Most motorcycles operate on 12 volts, so you will not be wiring in power and ground wires for this 3 volt remote. You will be using the watch type battery that is provided with your remote for the power source.

Step 4 Now close your opener remote back up (you may have to cut holes for the wire to come out), and your ready to mount it.

Step 5 Next, find a place to mount your remote, usually somewhere under the seat would work best. Now find a spot near the handlebars or triple tree to mount the push button switch. Run the wires under the tank edge or somewhere else hidden. Use wire ties to hold wiring in place.

How this works is when you push the button, it connects the inner contacts in your remote. It's that simple. The downfall on the 3 volt remote mod, is that the remote battery will eventually drain, and you will have to replace it periodically.

As always have fun, and be safe.
