How to test a dryer heating element

Summary: Test your dryer heating element to find out if it needs replaced.

If your electric clothes dryer stops heating properly, or your dry times are lengthy, then your heating element could be at fault.

To test your electric heating element, first find out where it is located in your dryer. This can be found by using the owners manual part diagram, or researching it online.

Step 1 Be sure to disconnect your power plug first! You do not want to eat 240 volts, that will hurt so be safe.

Step 2 Next disconnect the two wires on the element, these are where you will be checking for continuity.  Look at the picture, the two arrows are pointing to the 2 metal contacts.

Step 3 Now put a meter lead on each contact, you should read some amount of continuity through the element. If you do not, then the element is broken. Sometimes you could get a false continuity if the inner coils are shorted to the frame, but most likely, if you get a reading, then it is good. Look for a different culprit to your problem, like say a clogged lint vent.

Be safe and save money, do it yourself.
