How to test a resistor                 Test Procedures

Summary: Learn how to test a resistor. Click the tab above to open the resistor color chart.

Resistors add a load to a circuit and drop the current flow. Depending on the amount of resistance applied by each resistor will vary the voltage and amperage output of the circuit.

Most resistors are small long cylinder shaped pieces with a metal wire protruding out of each end that is soldered onto a printed circuit board.

Resistors can be run in series or parallel into the circuit and depending on how it is inserted, will determine how much it effects the output.

Resistors are labeled with distinct colored bands that indicate it's resistance value. Click on the tab at the top left of page to check your resistors value.

To check to see if a resistor is working properly, just follow these next few simple steps below.

Step 1 For the most accurate reading, first de-solder one end of the resistor from the circuit board. If your resistor is already separate from a circuit board, move to step two.

Step 2 Now set your multimeter to the Ohms setting, using the Ohms range that will best suit your resistor's specific value. Resistor Chart.

Step 3 Finally, hold the red meter lead to one side of the resistor, while touching the other side with the black meter lead. Check the display on your meter to see if it matches the indicated value of the color bands. If it does, then your resistor is good, if the value is different, then it's time to get a new resistor.
